So much so that it’s hard to decide which Panny better fits your needs. Panny’s best 42-inch model, the TH-42PHD7UY (industrial version) gets serious competition from the Panasonic TH-42PX50U (consumer version).

Full Review

Here are links to our other pages.

Flat panel monitor advantages of plasma TVs and LCD TVs
LCD TV ratings
best LCD TVs in the 26 inch screen size
best 42 inch plasma TVs
NEC 42VR5 plasma TV.
Panasonic TH-42PHD7UY
NEC-42XR3
Pioneer PDP-4340
Panasonic 50 inch plasma TV
Pioneer 50 inch plasma TV
FAQ for HDTV
EDTV vs. HDTV
A link exchnage page

Go to our other site for audio visual equipment reviews. This is not the usual mass market crap! We get straight to the point. We'll focus our unbiased reviews on topline HDTV products. The www.the-hdtv-review.com is a new website and we will be adding to it frequently.

We've added a couple of articles to our site. Read about the innovative technolgy Philips uses on its 37 inch LCD TV. The Philips 37 inc LCD TV

There's an odd screen size. The 46 inch EDTV is manufactured by Daewoo. Read our review of the Daewoo 46 inch plasma TV

Here's an interesting Q and A from the AVS Forum. A great place to learn about HDTV
Question:
Is LCD really better?
I've been planning to buy a flat panel HDTV and had originally thought about a 50" plasma (maybe Panny). One of the other forums warns to stay away from plasma because of burn-in (primarily) and other issues such as heat. They steered me toward LCD and I've been seriously considering the Sharp Aquos 45". It's real nice but the best price is well over six grand. The wife insists on a flat panel, wall-mounted, so it has to be plasma or LCD. The plasmas cost less. Is the LCD really that much better? Thanks for any advice!

Answer:
There are definately some differences between the technologies to make one "better" for you, but it depends on what you identify as being most important.

Cost: Plasma is better, cost per inch is lower.
Color staturation: Plasma, plasma produces more accurate and more highly saturated colors.
Viewing angle: Plasma, there are no viewing angle issues, LCD is a mixed bag, some are better than others, but in general Plasma is going to be at least as good if not better.
Response time: Plasma. LCD suffer from lag which can result in ghosting of images. Just try doing some serious gaming on LCD and you'll understand.
Blacks/greyscale: Plasma is better, the best Plasma sets can achieve CRT like blacks at .02 nits, and the grey scale ramp is more accurate.

Weight: LCD, they tend to be a bit lighter than Plasma.
Pixel density: LCD, currently, there aren't any "high" resolution Plasma sets below 50 inches.
Heat: LCD, LCD doesn't produce the heat plasma does.
Power consumption: LCD consumes less power.
Burn-in: Plasma has a higher chance at burn in. I've seen LCD screens "yellow" over time, but this isn't technically burn in. However, it's just as bad in my book. I don't know if LCD technology has done anything to address the yellowing issue.
Reliability: This is a tough one to call, but I tend to think LCD will be more reliable. Why? Because it's been with us in the consumer marketplace a good deal longer than Plasma. I feel LCD has had more time to work out the kinks than Plasma.

Other items to note: Due to burn in issues, Plasma performs a few tricks to help keep it from being an issue, one in particular can be annoying. If going from a dark screen with some white to a full white screen, several Plasma sets don't output the true white level of these mostly white screens, the result is a sense of whites not being correct.

Plasma screens are usually smooth reflective glass, I prefer this look to the antireflective coating of LCD sets. I think the coating interferes with the quality of the picture, to me it seems similar to the silkscreen effect. Some find the antireflective coating to be a plus in bright rooms.

That being said, I'm really looking forward to the new crop of LCD sets in the 40 inch range. The new CR numbers and response times, and price points could potentially make these sets the ones to beat.

Here's links to our other pages.

Flat panel monitor advantages of plasma TVs and LCD TVs
LCD TV ratings
best LCD TVs in the 26 inch screen size
best 42 inch plasma TVs
NEC 42VR5 plasma TV.
Panasonic TH-42PHD7UY
NEC-42XR3
Pioneer PDP-4340
Panasonic 50 inch plasma TV
Pioneer 50 inch plasma TV
FAQ for HDTV
EDTV vs. HDTV
A link exchnage page

Go to our other site for audio visual equipment reviews. A great place to learn about HDTV
Question
Nervous on my plasma purchase-please help
Hi I recently purchase a Samsung 5071 50" plasma from J&R Music World.

I am moving on the 25th and it is going to be delivered to my new place.

It still has not been delivered yet so I could exchange it for a different model. It was the best priced 50" and when I compared the picture in the store to the Sony KDE 955 50" it was very comparable..the Samsung was $1,000 less so I purchased the Samsung. But I have not found any reviews on the Samsung except here, one person said that there was a "Clayface" issue - that some faces looked like watercoler.

Also, I was not going to use the tv much for HDTV because I was going to run my new laptop with Windows media center DVR recording through the TV and that does not support HDTV yet. But in the future I think that I will get to use more HDTV

SHould I exchange the TV for another one? They also have a Philips 50PF9966 in addition to the SONY 50".

Answer:
If you did an in-store eye comparison yourself and were satisfied with the results, then why change? You'll hear good and bad reviews on most of the plasmas in this forum..just happens that not alot of people own the Samsung model here (I think it's a bit newer) so maybe there aren't enough opinions out there.

I haven't heard great things about the Samsungs in general but I've only seen a 42 ED model briefly and didn't make any comparisons..I did notice that they are priced very agressively though...which can be a good thing somtimes..

But If you saw it and liked it, I'd hold on to it and do a in-home check..then return it IF you have to...assuming the store has a good return policy..

Here's links to our other pages.

Flat panel monitor advantages of plasma TVs and LCD TVs
LCD TV ratings
best LCD TVs in the 26 inch screen size
best 42 inch plasma TVs
NEC 42VR5 plasma TV.
Panasonic TH-42PHD7UY
NEC-42XR3
Pioneer PDP-4340
Panasonic 50 inch plasma TV
Pioneer 50 inch plasma TV
FAQ for HDTV
EDTV vs. HDTV
A link exchnage page

Go to our other site for audio visual equipment reviews. Here's another interesting question and answer plucked from the AVS Forum.

Question: plasma TV prices?
I read in Consumer Reports that the prices of plasma TVs were going to drop significantly in the coming months (the article was published this month). Does anybody know when? I plan on getting the Sony KDE-42XS955, but if the price drops by 25%...I would like to wait

Answer:It is hard to know exactly when, but there are a few indicators out there to watch for...there is new tech coming out for plasma TVs like higher contrast ratios, new tuners, etc....those should be out by mid year-fall...

Plus, if one thinks that in Summer PDP sales sometimes decrease due to the fact that people is more likely to spend time outside due to the nice weather then I would expect the retailers/ manufacturers to drop prices in the middle of the summer or towards the beginning of the fall...

So there you go...hope that helps!!...I personally monitored my PDP price throughout last year and decided to buy in November...the lowest price I registered was actually in August - September...

Here's links to our other pages.

Flat panel monitor advantages of plasma TVs and LCD TVs
LCD TV ratings
best LCD TVs in the 26 inch screen size
best 42 inch plasma TVs
NEC 42VR5 plasma TV.
Panasonic TH-42PHD7UY
NEC-42XR3
Pioneer PDP-4340
Panasonic 50 inch plasma TV
Pioneer 50 inch plasma TV
FAQ for HDTV
EDTV vs. HDTV
A link exchnage page

Go to our other site for audio visual equipment reviews. We've added a new article to our site. NEC 42VR5 EDTV plasma TV.

The AVS Forum is a great place to find answers to any HDTV question. Here's another interesting question and answer plucked from the AVS Forum.

Question: Walmart online for Panasonic plasmas?
Has anyone used Walmart online for plasmas? They seem to carry the Panasonic Viera plasmas. Specifically, I'm interested to know what their return policy is. This is what their website says:

Returns Guidelines by Department
All merchandise purchased from Walmart.com may be returned either to a store or by mail within 90 days of receiving it, unless otherwise noted below. Additional guidelines are also noted below. . .

Returns Exceptions

* Oversize items: Some heavy or large items that are identified as oversize on their item pages may be returned to a store or by Freight shipping. Under some circumstances, you may be charged for return shipping. To return an item by Freight, call Customer Service at 1-800-966-6546. They will also be able to inform you of any return shipping costs.
* If you were sent an incorrect, damaged or defective product, we will issue a credit for any applicable shipping and gift-wrapping charges.

So if you get a plasma with a dead pixel, will they pick up the plasma and send you a new one, and pay for all the costs?

Answer: It looks like Walmart has expanded their line of plasmas quite a bit. Interesting that they have broken the $2k barrier for a 42" HD plasma everyday priced not a sale. It is interesting to see the price jump from under $2k for the 42" HD and almost $4k for the 50". If you have two antennas (one facing each station), can you use a splitter/combiner to have the leads from both antennas go into your tuner, in order to get both signals without having to move your antenna?

Answer: Yep, you sure can.

If both antennas are the same, as in UHF or VHF or UHF/VHF combo, you'll need to get a Channel Master Joinantenna to block out the frequency on one of the antennas.

If both antennas are NOT the same, ie one is UHF the other is VHF, a simple 2-way splitter used in reverse will accomplish this.

It's all kinda a crapshoot! Most antennas will pick up signals from ALL directions (I'm not talking about so called "omnidirectional" antennas either). Obviously, the received signal strength from the direction the antenna is pointed should be the strongest by far. But, there is almost certainly a weak/faint signal received from the sides and even the back of where it is aimed. The problem hooking 2 antennas together is then to try and get the received signals perfectly in phase... which can be very, very difficult if not impossible (at least affordably). If you don't accomplish this, you will likely end up with ghosting when you watch TV.

I'll carry your example a little further. Suppose both your antennas are VHF. With one you are trying to receive channel 2 (aimed north), the other channel 3 (aimed east). Lets assume that you get a nice, strong signal from each of the antennas separately. The problem is, there will be a weak signal of channel 2 on the east antenna and likewise a weak signal of channel 3 on the north antenna. If you merely use a signal splitter/combiner, most likely the strong signals and weak signals won't be perfectly in sync. This will result in ghosting on both channels (at least in analog land). You've probably heard of a similar problem people have with only one antenna called multi-path. It's pretty much the same thing except instead of the weaker signal coming from another antenna it is picked up by the back or side of the same antenna after it bounces off of buildings/trees/etc.

Probably the best (at least cheapest) thing you can do is to go ahead and try to combine them both with a decent splitter/combiner. You might luck out and get acceptable results. You can verify if you are creating a problem by hooking up each antenna separately, check out the quality of the picture on each then try them together to see if it is degraded. If not, or if the change is acceptable to you then great. If not, you'll either need to use filters as taz291819 said or you could use only one antenna mounted on a rotator (that you'd have to use whenever switching channels). There are a couple of things you can do to try and improve the results of combining with the splitter. Install your antennas outside... this should maximize the difference between the weak and strong signals. Mount both antennas on the same mast... this will help minimize the reception timing between the signals (reduce the mis-match). If you do that, you'll need to space them out vertically at least half the longest wavelength you are trying to receive which is, I believe, equivalent to the longest element on a yagi antenna (someone PLEASE correct me on this if I'm remembering it wrong!). You could buy the most directional antennas you can afford that claim to minimize multipath interference. Finally, you can try playing around with the length of coax running between each antenna and the splitter to try and improve the signal meshing (good luck... this one is a real pain in the a**!).

Well, I guess that is about all I can think of off the top of my head to tell you. I should mention that I've gone through the same thing and finally got an antenna rotator. Also, this all applies to analog OTA reception. I'm not sure whether it would be the same for digital reception (digital tuners might be able to ignore the "ghosted" signal)..

Here's links to our other pages.

Flat panel monitor advantages of plasma TVs and LCD TVs
LCD TV ratings
best LCD TVs in the 26 inch screen size
best 42 inch plasma TVs
Panasonic TH-42PHD7UY
NEC-42XR3
Pioneer PDP-4340
Panasonic 50 inch plasma TV
Pioneer 50 inch plasma TV
FAQ for HDTV
A link exchnage page

Go to our other site for audio visual equipment reviews. The set top box (STB) may be a far better solution. Then you will have basically turned your plasma "TV" into a plasma "monitor".

Note that there are OTA tuners (e.g., NTSC, ASTC) as well as cable tuners.

NTSC tuner allows antenna or cable direct to the TV, to tune in the analogue channels you've been getting for years. With a digital cable box, you don't need it.

The ATSC tuner gets digital channels, and OTA (over the air) HD digital broadcasts leading to a revival of the humble (and ugly) antenna to bring in free TV.

You may find that there are digital stations which broadcast HD which are not yet available on your cable system. This is not the usual mass market crap! We get straight to the point. We'll focus our unbiased reviews on topline HDTV products. The www.the-hdtv-review.com is a new website and we will be adding to it frequently.

We've added a new article to our site. We've reviewed the 43" Pioneer PDP-4340 HDTV.

The following article is some of the best advise I've seen on how to prepare to buy a plasma TV. It came from the AVS Forum and was posrted by Macfan424.

"I know many fervent advocates of different brands will disagree, but there is no "best" brand, only the one(s) that you like best.

You won't go wrong with any of the major Japanese brands, Panasonic, Sony, Hitachi, JVC, Toshiba, Pioneer, etc. They are all good. Each has its strengths and weaknesses. Zealots to the contrary, none really "blows away" all the others.

Fujitsu has a avid following, but they tend to be expensive, usually above your range unless you can find their ED set (I've never seen one).

Dell uses Korean glass and American circuits. On sale, they offer a terrific value, but controversial QC. Check out their thread in this forum and decide for yourself.

LG (Zenith/Goldstar) and Samsung are second and third in global sales (behind Panasonic), so they obviously have something going for them, but I'm still (probably unfairly) biased against the Korean manufacturers because of perceived QC issues. For some reason, Philips tends to be overlooked, although their commercials a few years ago did a lot toward raising public awareness of flat panel displays and CR rates them well.

I spent a year and a half researching before I bought my Panasonic 42PD25U. If I were to start all over again, here's what I would do:

First, decide whether you want ED or "true" HD. Check in some stores to determine for yourself whether you can see a difference from the distance from which you will be watching. If you can, decide how much you are willing to pay for that difference.

Next, decide whether you want a consumer or a commercial set. Like buying a car, you must determine which features you need, which are "nice, but not critical," and which you are unlikely to use.

Consumer sets have more features, flashier styling, and (sometimes) better warrantees, as well as having to meet somewhat more stringent government standards. Commercial sets offer great value. They provide very good PQ for the money, but tend to be minimalist in styling and features, and things like table stands, HDMI/DVI inputs, tuners and speakers are extra cost options that can drive the cost up beyond the consumer version if you add them.

At the same time, consider whether want to buy on the internet or from a B&M. The former is usually less expensive, but if something goes wrong, returning the big, expensive machine could be a hassle. Commercial sets are scarce in B&M's while many internet vendors do not offer the consumer versions.

Once you have decided what your basic needs are (including your budget), you should be able to focus on a manageable number of models by weeding out those that don't meet your criteria. Check out "expert" reviews, such as CNET and Consumer Reports. Read user comments, not only here but on various sites all over the net. And look at the sets you are considering in more than one store.

Reviews are invaluable, because choosing a TV set on a sales floor is difficult and frustrating. Too much depends on the picture settings, ambient lighting, and even the quality of the feeds. I compared my two finalists, the Panasonic and the Sony KE42M1 in several locations, preferring the Panasonic PQ in some stores and the Sony in others. It was a close call, but in the end, I chose the Panasonic as a better value, with its lower price and built-in HDTV tuner (which I use for 80% of my viewing) as well as amenities such as PIP and greater connectivity. I'm delighted with it, but my choice is not necessarily yours.

Finally, as someone else suggested, don't get paralysis from analysis. There will always be something new arriving soon. Prices will always drop over time. The fact is, most current plasmas are very good and their prices are reasonable for the pleasure they provide.

I hope this helps in some small way."

Truly one of the best summations on plasma TV buying.

The AVS Forum is a great place to find answers to any HDTV question.

Here's links to our other pages.

Flat panel monitor advantages of plasma TVs and LCD TVs
LCD TV ratings
best LCD TVs in the 26 inch screen size
best 42 inch plasma TVs

Panasonic 50 inch plasma TV
Pioneer 50 inch plasma TV
FAQ for HDTV
A link exchnage page

Go to our other site for audio visual equipment reviews. Can I output (using a simple connector) from a DVI-HDCP output to the HDMI (i.e. will HDCP programming be displayed, or will it be blocked)?

2. Can I use the DVI-D input to connect from a DVI output on a DVD player?

Answer:Yes, you can output from a DVI/HDCP output to the HDMI input. I use a DVI/HDMI adapter from my Sony HD200 HD Directv receiver to the Fujitsu HDMI input. No problem.

I don't believe the DVI-D input will accept signals other than those from a computer, but I haven't tried it. I believe there was discussion on this early on and we pretty much came to the conclusion we gained an HDMI input but lost the DVI input for non-computer applications.

The AVS Forum is a great place to find answers to any HDTV question.

We've just created a new HDTV Review website. I hear very little about Runco outside of their projectors although the one HD version I saw compared to the Fujitsu seemed to have odd color. The sales guy was REALLY pushing Runco.. Which would you choose?

Answer:
I am a big fan of both companies. I thought the RUNCO ED 42" was selling at the same price as the 42" HD FUJITSU. If that was the case, i would get the FUJITSU. I guess my biggest factor would be the price point on both. I think both panels look great. This is not the usual mass market crap! We get straight to the point. We'll focus our unbiased reviews on topline HDTV products. The www.the-hdtv-review.com is a new website and we will be adding to it quickly.

I've just pulled this off of the AVS forum. This forum is an invaluable source of HDTV info. The thread discusses the impending release of the much awaited Panasonic plasma TVs:

Have not seen much info on what 42" ED Hitachi, Samsung, NEC, JVC will be introducing in 2005. The specs for the new consumer Panny 42"ED leave me looking for something else. I plan to purchase around September 2005 - so I have an interest in what new models will be introduced in the upcoming months. From CES there seems to be details on the HD versions (with very little to nothing on the ED models). A Pioneer 42"ED consmer version in a B&M would be a nice addition.

The new Samsung Plasma's look awesome if the spec's are for real instead of marketing hype.

There are rumors of Sony also bringing the SXRD from Qualia 006 to a consumer (middle class income) version that will be the next Trinitron for Sony as Sony is Leaving Plasma. Sony is secretive though, I've seen estimates of a few months to next year.

NEC Plasma is owned by Pioneer since last Fall and so I would expect to see some sharing between both as top quality plasma's.

Also LG has a 71" LCOS to compete with the Qualia 006 70" and the new versions of JVC D-ILA 720P (April/May), 1080P sets (Oct/Nov) the JVC new versions look very promising at a terrific price target.

Hard to make a decision with the choices but it seems that nothing has arrived since all the fuss from CES in early January and that is getting frustrating waiting and unable to compare. Good Luck!

The AVS forunm is a terrific forum for up to date HDTV info.

Here are links to the pages we've created.

Flat panel monitor advantages of plasma TVs and LCD TVs
LCD TV ratings
best LCD TVs in the 26 inch screen size
best 42 inch plasma TVs

Panasonic 50 inch plasma TV
Pioneer 50 inch plasma TV

Go to our othher site for audio visual equipment reviews.
